Ashleyville Cemetery (ca. 1810)

Ashley_Solomon_Caroline_1864.jpg

Located along busy Riverdale Street, this cemetery contains an amazing array of John Ely sandstone monuments. Particularly enjoyable in the early spring when the dozens of forsythia shrubs are in bloom.

West (AKA Center) Cemetery

Combination of old and new gravestones. Older stones are predominantly slate. We were there in early August, and the older section was unmowed, reminiscent of the condition of early burial grounds.

William Campbell 1782193 viewsA good example of the way a fine piece of schist withstands centuries of weathering in the harsh New England climate. Small details, like the caret used to insert the 'p' in Campbell, can still be seen more than two hundred years after it was carved.
