Hermon Newell

white_urania_1819.jpg

Hermon Newell is one of local researchers’ favorite carvers, simply because he signed so many of his stones, making identification easy. Based in Longmeadow, he appears to have been trained in the Stebbins shop.

Thomas Spelman

miller_smith.jpg

Thomas Spelman was raised in Middletown, Connecticut. The proliferation of gravestone carvers in the area during his formative years very likely influenced his choice of careers. Shortly after his marriage in 1732, he moved to Durham, where his wife’s family lived. While there, he established a reputation as a competent gravestone carver. In the early 1750s he moved to Granville, Massachusetts, where he continued to carve, gaining the respect of the neighboring towns.

George Griswold

_1689_Taylor_Elizabeth.jpg

One of the original gravestones carvers in western Massachusetts. He carved in stone from the Windsor, Connecticut, quarries in the late 1600s. A talented stone mason, his stones show an eye for careful lettering, and often have a simple, unbroken line carved around the edge.

Sikes Family

Shepard_Margaret_1769.jpg

The Sikes family carved out of Windham, Connecticut. Their work on schist stands out among the redstone, slate and marble headstones. Their oddly carved tympanums also stand out in their odd configurations.

Thankfule Grant 177019 viewsInteresting schist carving by Phelps in a number of ways.
Unusual to see a bow tie under the chin on a woman's
stone. This ornament was normally reserved for the clergy.
Notice her initials (TG) under the cherub, making
the cost of the stone even greater than normal.
